Hot Wheels: Race Off

An Introduction to Hot Wheels: Race Off

For anyone born after 1968, chances are that at one time or another you had played with a Hot Wheels car! Or if like me and you never left the house with one in your pocket, then here is a game for you!  Full of nostalgia, and fun gameplay, Hot Wheels: Race Off is great for adults and kids alike!

Hot Wheels: Race Off : Gameplay

Extremely similar to other games of the genre such as Mini Racing Adventures, Hot Wheels: Race Off is a side scrolling physics based racer where players simply have two controls, acceleration on the right and braking on the left. Furthermore, these controls also adjust the tilt levels when airborne.  If falling backwards then braking will tip the nose down, whilst accelerating will pull the front of the car up.
Winning races and pulling often impressive jumps, stunts and flips will earn coins and XP which can be spent upgrading cars and unlocking new courses.

  • Upgrade!
: The better the ride the easier the win! But be sure to upgrade evenly for a best results! Yet obviously speed, grip and stability are better for finishing a course, and tilt is better for stunts.
  • Free Gifts!
: Free gifts and gems can be opened for free every few hours so be sure to check back regularly and take advantage of the video advertisement which can double the gems!
  • Aim to Finish!
: As tempting as it is to go hard on every jump, some jumps lend themselves to different types of stunts. So try completing each course once to learn the layout and then replay for bonus points.
  • Flip!
: Doing flips and getting big air is the quickest way to unlock stunt chests which can have huge rewards inside!
  • Conserve Fuel!
: It is very easy to run out of fuel mid-race and as such it shouldn’t be wasted! Sometimes it is better to not accelerate rather than constantly braking and going . . . Forward flips also use less full than backflips extra!

Personal Impressions of Hot Wheels: Race Off

The iconic orange racetrack instantly stirs nostalgic feelings and childhood memories. The speed and ease of which the game can be picked up and enjoyed by even young children yet difficultly to master, make Hot Wheels: Race Off a game that players can keep coming back to!  The in app advertisements though present are not overly aggressive.  The graphics and sound effects are adept without being too heavy to cause lag and lengthy loading times.

There is a fair bit of a grind to earn enough coins to fulfill all of the upgrades necessary to unlock a new car however and more importantly to be able to get your car to high enough level of stats to even be able to finish a race! Yet despite this almost fascist regimentation of which cars can be used on which track, the most annoying factor is that each car and there are over 20, has their own unique currency and as such they are not interchangeable.  So if by chance there is a particular car that you either love or hate, you have to stop using it or use it exclusively until you have grinded out enough of the latest cars coins to be able to unlock a new car…

That said however, it is still a very fun game to spend some time with! Yet for die-hard driving game enthusiasts who love the Asphalt series & Need for Speed games, then perhaps this genre of driving game may not suit.
Three stars out of five.
